• Punch Drunk Love 2002 (R)

Punch Drunk Love **  A bit plodding.  Interesting but not memorable.  Adam Sandler plays a sort of sad sack who gets in trouble after signing up with a phone sex service.

  • Stand By Me 1986 (R)

Stand By Me **** This classic has some rough language and shows 13 year olds smoking.  River Phoenix and Wil Wheaton are terrific. It’s on the low end of the R rating.  Recommended.

  • Some Kind of Wonderful 1987 (PG-13)

Some Kind of Wonderful ***** One of my favorite John Hughes coming of age movies.   I loved Mary Stuart Masterson in it.  Eric Stolz was ok though he seemed kind of uninspired throughout except for the tense scene with his father where he finally showed some emotion.  Good story and great happy ending.

Monster vs Aliens *** Animation was great, it was entertaining and funny.  It did not rise to the level of  The Incredibles.  I didn’t think the story was that strong or engaging.  I found the monsters so arbitrary and hard to really care about, except for Susan who wasn’t really a monster.  Kids loved it, of course.

Watchmen  **** NFK.  It was kinda campy.  Very different kind of movie  but I really enjoyed it.  Wasn’t crazy about the ending but the story was interesting. It was shot dark, kinda like Batman.

Australia **** A long  movie.  Really two  movies in one.  The first half  concerns cattle-ranching,  the second half the approach of War.  Editing could have been tighter especially between the halves.  My favorite performance by  Hugh Jackman; Nicole  Kidman, no so  much.  Looked beautiful on Blu-ray.

  • Frequency 2000 (PG-13)

Frequency ***.  I like the premise of the movie.  A shift in time allows a son to speak to his Dad just before the Dad dies in a fire fighter accident.  The story that develops regarding a serial killer didn’t really engage me however but the ending was satisfying though a bit confusing.

  • The Departed 2006 (R)

The  Departed ***** NFK.  Lots of graphic blowing out of the brains.  Two and a half hour movie.  Incredible story with twists and turns that actually seem plausible.  Second time I’ve watched it and I forgot how it ended!  Incredible ending.  Interesting to see two big stars like DeCaprio and Damon especially when they finally share the screen at the end.  They both put in great performances upstaging Nicholson in my opinion.

  • Borat 2006 (R)

Borat ** NFK.  Very Crude. Yes some funny parts.  The 2 stars says it all. Review my star legend.  Be sure to view the uncensored extra features on the DVD.

  • Munich 2005 (R)

Munich ** NFK. This is a long movie. About 2:45.  It really wasn’t that  suspenseful and I didn’t feel that connected to any of the characters including the main character played by Eric Bana.  It seemed very drawn out.  Early look at Daniel Craig.
